STATEMENT
Painting as a Medium of Resonance Between the World and Human Beings:
My body of work seeks to touch and know the world through sensation, beyond language, and to create something like an epic or a chronicle—not of facts or events themselves, but of the sensation of living in the present.
Perhaps it is an attempt to sense, recognize, visualize, and share, through painting, a new kind of “nature” that is now emerging, but has yet to be sufficiently articulated or made visible.
The world that surrounds us is already being formed on a vast scale by the enormous amount of information generated through human consciousness and by the networks through which it is connected. Created through the intentions of individuals, these countless elements become entangled with one another, forming a vast informational environment that exceeds the intentions of any individual.
This “informational environment” has now begun to exceed the boundaries within which it has traditionally been treated as “information”—something to be articulated in language or quantified—and is becoming, for human beings, a new kind of “nature.”
Insofar as this environment surrounds and encompasses us from within, it resembles the natural environment as we have traditionally understood it. Yet it is fundamentally different in that it has been created by us, by human beings themselves.
We have created this environment, and we have enclosed ourselves within it. Naturally, we cannot exist outside it. Each of us connects to this world in different ways, while being incorporated into it as an individual human being. Within it, the intentions and identities of individuals become entangled, and an identity of the world itself—something that exceeds the intentions of individuals—seems to emerge.
I sense, between the identity of the individual and the identity of the world itself as it emerges from the whole, a rough, abrasive sense of unease, reminiscent of the matière of painting. In this sense, my work is not an observational rendering of this informational nature.
The environment formed by human beings simultaneously presses upon us, governs us, absorbs us, and continues to shape us as part of itself. Within it, individuals resist it, or become caught up in it, while being carried along by the ceaseless flow of time. Yet perhaps such a process is precisely what “life” means for human beings.
I feel that I receive all of this, as one human being, through sensation. And I believe that this sensation is not mine alone, but is shared, to varying degrees, by those of us living in the same era.
