Viewing Space Projectとは(English below)
Ickkow Nakamura Viewing Space Project(INViSP)

about Viewing Space Project
The Ickkow Nakamura Viewing Space Project (INViSP) is an exhibition-based project run by me, Ickkow Nakamura, primarily to present my own work.
Put simply, it is an exhibition — by myself, of my own work, curated by myself.
After withdrawing from art university partway through, for personal reasons, I have continued to study, research, and produce work in aesthetics, art history, visual culture, and related fields almost entirely on my own.
I have remained largely outside institutional frameworks of art education and practice, working from an independent position, and until now I've had almost no opportunity to show my work in any public setting. But through the continued act of making work, I've come to believe that what I make isn't merely personal expression, but something that can carry meaning for society and history as well.
As someone who makes work, I've also kept thinking about questions like the significance of being evaluated by others, how to reach and engage with audiences, and what the most appropriate way of doing so might be — all while keeping an eye on developments in the contemporary art scene, both in Japan and abroad.
That thinking led me to a conclusion: to set up an independent space of my own for presenting my work.
This isn't simply a matter of putting up my own pieces.
Even when the content on view consists entirely of my own work, each exhibition will be built around its own theme, with the content changing at set intervals, and I'll prepare a statement for every exhibition — treating each one as an exhibition in its own right.
In that sense, this is also different from a typical "open studio". The goal here isn't to open up my working process to view; the basic vision behind this project is to build, myself, an independent exhibition space for presenting the work.
In Japan, too, there have been precedents for presenting work outside existing institutional frameworks — self-founded museums, artist-run collective spaces, and the like.
INViSP, however, wasn't started with any particular precedent in mind as a model.
I naturally have my own view on what this kind of approach might mean for the current state of art, but ultimately, it's the people who come here and see the work who will decide what it means.
In that sense too, I'd be glad if this project caught your interest.
And above all, if my work can serve as a point of contact — something through which you sense whatever lies beyond it, or something of the world itself — nothing would make me happier.
